Compared to historical trends, new roadway construction is slowing. Much construction work is roadway rehabilitation and/or widening. The new lane miles add capacity and attempt to improve driving conditions for Florida’s motorists.

The Federal Highway Administration reports the number of centerline miles and lane miles annually. The Highway Statistics Series is available online at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ohim/ohimstat.htm. This resource lists the mileage by ownership and functional classification.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s Transportation Statistics Office also gathers and reports roadway mileage twice per year. The number of miles is available by road classification, such as - interstate, toll roads, etc. For more information on highway infrastructure, visit http://www.dot.state.fl.us/planning/statistics/#resources.

This indicator shows the annual percent change in public road centerline miles in Florida. The sharp changes in 2002 and 2004 may indicate inclusion and again deletion of some private roads. The data is sourced from Federal Highway Administration Highway Statistics Series.
